Four years in the Royal Navy, including time aboard HMS Illustrious, took me from a boy to a young man. The discipline, resilience and standards from that time have stayed with me, and they still shape how I train people and how I run this business.

After the Navy I chased another passion, Mixed Martial Arts. I competed more than ten times and built a solid amateur record, learning a lot through the highs, the lows and the commitment it takes. Then I put fighting on pause and turned personal training from a passion into a career. That is ten years now, working with people from all walks of life.

What I have learned is that fitness is about far more than lifting weights or losing weight. It is confidence, good habits, pushing past what you thought was possible, and having the right people around you. That belief is why Illustrious exists. Not just another gym, but somewhere to train hard, have fun and be part of a real community.

And this is only the beginning. Vox non incerta.

From the age of fourteen, photography was my passion, and I followed it all the way to a degree. Sport was always there too, quietly running alongside it. Then COVID hit in my final year and I lost my spark, my sense of direction and, honestly, a little of myself.

Training was how I found my way back. It gave me routine, confidence and something to feel proud of when I needed it most, and it reminded me how powerful fitness can be for your mind as much as your body. Once I recognised how much it had changed my life, I wanted to help other people feel that too.

I took the apprenticeship route because I wanted to do it properly. Two and a half years at Places Gym, then three years at the University of Sheffield completing my qualifications and building a full client base. Ian mentored me throughout, which is part of why joining Illustrious felt less like a new job and more like a natural next step.

For me it has never been about sets and reps. It is confidence, resilience, and having a laugh while you discover you are capable of far more than you believed. I have just swapped the camera for a barbell.

I went through school and college incredibly insecure and unconfident, five stone wet through. I started going to the gym like anyone else, and then something clicked. It became my safe space, one hour out of my day where the insecurities disappeared and I felt like myself.

I was studying sport and exercise science with physiotherapy in mind when I got a job on a gym reception, and that changed everything. Working alongside brilliant PTs, I loved the genuine human connection of watching people do well and keep showing up.

A year later I was asked to teach group classes of around thirty people, which was genuinely my worst fear. I jumped in at the deep end, got my qualifications and never looked back. Teaching classes is one of the best feelings in the world.

Three years in, I am certain this is what I am meant to do. I never stop learning. A hidden love for running shifted how I train and pushed me to sit my Level 4 in Strength and Conditioning. I also founded TWR, Together We Run, a community driven run club, back in 2024.
